B3 Offsets its Greenhouse Gas Emissions for the Seventh Consecutive Year

São Paulo, November 12, 2018B3 has offset 4,790 tons of CO2 equivalent for its 2017 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions not liable to be reduced, thus becoming a "carbon neutral" company for another year. To offset this amount of CO2, carbon credits – called CERs (Certified Emission Reductions) – generated under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol were purchased. The initiative has been in place since 2013, 2011 and 2012 base years, and since then this process has been performed on a yearly basis.

The goal of this carbon emission project, in which 4,790 tCO2e were offset, is to generate electricity from renewable sources in Brazil and help meet its growing energy demand. The benefit of the project is the production of clean, small-scale electricity, thus minimizing environmental impacts.

Offsetting GHG emissions is an evolutionary step in B3’s carbon offset efforts begun in 2009, when the company completed its first GHG emissions inventory. As of 2010 the inventory began to be verified by a third party. Through this initiative, B3 expects to identify, manage and reduce its environmental impact and contribute to global efforts against climate change and its effects, while seeking to adopt the best sustainability practices by listed companies and the market in general.
